On April 30, Vice Mayor Valeche joined dozens of residents of Limestone Creek, Congressman Patrick Murphy, Jupiter town officials, the Loxahatchee Historical Society and county representatives to dedicate a Florida state historic marker in honor of the L.M. Davis Elementary School.

The school, originally founded in 1905 for African-American children in Jupiter, was destroyed in the 1928 hurricane.  Community member Louis Mosely Davis donated an acre of his homestead for the construction of a new school on a site which now houses the Limestone Creek Neighborhood Park. The school was renamed in 1956 to honor the donor.

The Loxahatchee River Historical Society researched and compiled history on the school, its founders and teachers, and worked with Parks & Recreation to obtain the historic designation and marker from the State of Florida Bureau of Historic Preservation.  Several former students and teachers from the school were on hand at the dedication to share stories and reminisce about their experiences.

Vice Mayor Valeche praised the Limestone Creek community for carrying on the activism that defined the school’s founders.  “The spirit of pride and perseverance and the commitment to provide education, opportunity and a higher quality of life embodied by the settlers of this neighborhood lives on in the current residents today,” he said.
