Sand placement is underway in Segment II of the North County Comprehensive Shore Protection Project. This section runs 7,700 feet in length from the south end of Carlin Park to the middle of the Ocean Park Preserve in Jupiter. This dune restoration project includes exotic plant removal and treatment, and placement of 27,500 cubic yards of material above the water line, trucked in from an upland sand mine.

Narrow beach widths limit placement in some areas that are still actively eroding. Recent major placements of sand in Segments I and III to the north and south act as feeders to adjacent beaches, so improvement should be seen in Segment II during this year. Environmental Resources Management scientists and the contractors are working to ensure there is no threat to the road infrastructure.

In connection with this Segment, a feasibility study is being performed that will indicate if a more traditional beach fill project is possible, to place more sand toward the water and build the physical dry beach eastward. This is a long-term goal, and if determined feasible, would provide an opportunity to combine beach nourishment segment construction to save money on mobilization costs.
