Intergovernmental Cooperation Brings Traffic Safety Solutions to Our Communities

The intersection at University Boulevard and Central Boulevard in the Abacoa community of District 1 presented significant safety issues needing a fix.  Palm Beach County and the Town of Jupiter collaborated to design a peanut-shaped roundabout with enhanced striping that has been operational for one year.

Town engineers compiled safety statistics from the past year, and compared them with statistics from the prior nine years to evaluate the effectiveness of the new intersection design.  Before the roundabout was constructed, the average crash frequency was 13.1 crashes per year from 2012 to 2021.  After the roundabout was constructed, crashes lessened to four in 2021-22.  The comparison revealed that the total crash frequency declined 69%, crash rate (per million entering vehicles) declined by 73% and crash severity declined more than 50%.  This empirical data demonstrates the safety benefit of the roundabout.

Palm Beach County appreciates the ingenuity of Town officials in proposing this solution, and supports opportunities to collaborate with our municipal partners.
