On Monday, Feb. 28, Commissioner Michael A. Barnett attended the annual Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) meeting with important discussions regarding the fentanyl crisis.

Commissioner Barnett invited a mother who lost her son to a fentanyl overdose to share her experience and discussed this issue with State Attorney Dave Aronberg and Drug Enforcement Administration representatives.

Commissioner Barnett will be attending Palm Beach County Day in Tallahassee, from March 7-8. During this legislative day, county officials will request funding from the legislature for, among other requests, bolstering the fentanyl testing strip program, which has been proven to save lives.

“We also discussed reentry from prison with United States Attorney, and my former boss at the State Attorney’s Office, Adam McMichael, as well as alternatives to incarceration for people suffering from opioid addiction. They should be treated as patients instead of as criminals,” said Commissioner Barnett.

Commissioner Barnett also urged the CJC to seek input from groups such as the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“It is important to my district and to the people I represent to ensure sufficient Hispanic representation in every area of government, including and especially boards such as the CJC,” said Commissioner Barnett.
