Local and state governmental agencies coordinate improvements to our roads and bridges to create a better transportation network for drivers, boaters, and pedestrians alike.  Admittedly, they are not without growing pains.  As these projects move forward, it is important for drivers to be aware of detours, lane changes and intersection configurations, so that all of us can safely travel around our county.

A major project happening in North County is the replacement of the SR5/US1 Bridge, which crosses the Loxahatchee River/Intracoastal Waterway next to the Jupiter Lighthouse.  The new, twin double-leaf drawbridge will have up to 42 feet of vertical clearance and a navigable channel width of 125 feet.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is raising the height of the drawbridge so that fewer openings are necessary, and they are improving the pedestrian, bike and driving lanes for a better, safer facility.

Project engineers determined that a complete bridge closure would reduce the construction schedule.  Prior to the closure on March 13, 2023, FDOT constructed extensive intersection improvements for the required detour that consist of additional turn lanes at US1 at Indiantown Road, Alternate A1A and Indiantown Road, and US1 and Alternate A1A/Beach Road.  Additionally, permanent intersection improvements are in place at Alternate A1A and Old Dixie Highway.  Intelligent Transportation System devices, which use leading-edge information and communication technologies that collect and process real-time data, will improve safety and efficiency, and will reduce traffic congestion.

We urge drivers to be cognizant of the changes in traffic patterns during this project, and exercise patience.  Additionally, remember that people walk, run, and ride their bikes year-round in this community, so alertness is essential.  Do not let your cellphone or other distractions divert your attention from the road.

Your input on road conditions helps county engineers know where problems exist, whether it is faded road striping, potholes, or traffic signal timing.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to my office at (561) 355-2201/mmarino@pbcgov.org; or, you can contact Road & Bridge at (561) 233-3950/nights and weekends (561) 712-6428; or, the Traffic Division at (561) 684-4030.
