​At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on April 4, 2023, Vice Mayor Sachs presented a proclamation declaring April 4, 2023 as Lois Pope Day in Palm Beach County.  Lois Pope, one of America’s leading philanthropists, is recognized as one of the country’s foremost advocates for veterans and especially disabled veterans, earning her the moniker, “The Pope of Disabled Veterans.” She has made numerous generous local donations including an endowment to the Palm Beach County Food Bank for a program called Lois’ Food4kids. Her love and advocacy of animal welfare inspired her to give $1.5 million to the Tri-County Animal Rescue, the largest single donation the organization has ever received. The gift endowed a 9,000-square-foot veterinary center called the Lois Pope Pet Clinic. It was the first center in the region specifically geared to providing low-cost or free veterinary care to low-income families for their pets.
