At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on June 6, 2023, Commissioner Michael A. Barnett presented a proclamation declaring June 19, 2023, as Juneteenth Day. Juneteenth is a commemoration celebrating the emancipation of those kept in bondage in Texas two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

“Exactly 79 years ago today, my grandfather Tony Schiro marched with the United States Army and stormed Normandy to free millions from Nazi tyranny. Almost exactly 79 years before that, the United States Army marched into Texas to inform thousands of Black Americans that they were now free from the tyranny of slavery. Today, I had the high honor of issuing a Juneteenth Proclamation commemorating that important day in 1865,” said Commissioner Barnett.
