Following an inquiry of County Commissioner Gregg Weiss, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) agreed to install pedestrian safety enhancements near The Greene School making it safer for parents and students who walk to school. Prior requests for a reduced speed zone in 2018 and 2022 were denied but in a March email to Weiss, FDOT secretary Steve Braun agrees the zone designation is warranted.

”We have reassessed the need for a reduced speed school zone for school pedestrian traffic generated by The Greene School and agree that the zone is needed. The Department will include the construction of this new reduced speed school zone in its Dixie Highway resurfacing project (FM# 448415-1) scheduled to begin in December 2025.

In the interim, the Department will confirm that proper pedestrian signal clearance times are programmed in the pedestrian signals at the intersection of Dixie Highway and Flamingo Road, and install a “NO TURN ON RED” sign at the stop line on Flamingo Road east of Dixie Highway, facing westbound vehicles.

Thanks to the parents who shared their safety concerns with us and thanks to FDOT for making it safer for walkers to cross the road!
