Community Meeting Set for Jan. 30 on Proposed Central-Western Communities Overlay

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners is considering establishing an overlay to guide future development in the central-western communities, an unincorporated area of approximately 43,000 acres generally located west of Royal Palm Beach between Northlake and Southern boulevards.

The overlay would replace the sector plan which was adopted by the Board of County Commissioners in 2005, but which was found not to be in compliance with state requirements, and was subsequently repealed by the BCC.

A community meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 6 p.m. in the Media Center of Seminole Ridge Community High School to update residents on the planning effort and to obtain public comment on issues and topics related to development in the rural-residential area.

For further information, contact the Palm Beach County Planning Division at 233-5300. Seminole Ridge Community High School is located at 4601 Seminole Pratt-Whitney Road, approximately 2.5 miles north of Okeechobee Boulevard on the west side.

Palm Tran Announces “The LINK”

Palm Tran, Palm Beach County’s transit system, will launch “The LINK,” its new route deviation service, on February 11. Palm Tran will host a kick-off event on February 6 at 2 p.m. at the Caridad Center, 8645 W. Boynton Beach Blvd., Boynton Beach, where the Lime LINK will be introduced.

The Lime LINK is one of seven new Palm Tran routes serving residential and gated communities where fixed-route service is not available. The Lime LINK begins at Nassau Square on Lake Worth Road and runs south on Lyons Road to the Caridad Center. The Caridad Center provides free medical and dental care to a large population of agricultural workers, laborers and the working poor of Palm Beach County through the dedicated work of more than 500 licensed professional and community volunteers.

The other six LINKs are:

  • Blue LINK that operates on Mondays along Okeechobee Blvd. and Haverhill Road to Northlake Blvd. and Military Trail
  • Purple LINK that operates on Tuesdays and runs along Atlantic Ave. to Boynton Beach Blvd. and Military Trail via Hagen Ranch Road
  • Gold LINK that operates on Tuesdays and runs along Southern Blvd. to Okeechobee Blvd. and Royal Palm Beach Blvd. via Crestwood Blvd.
  • Orange LINK that operates on Wednesdays and runs along Congress Ave. and Belvedere Road to Northpoint Center at 45th Street via Village Blvd. and Westgate Ave.
  • Red LINK that operates on Thursdays and runs along U.S. 1 to Indiantown Road, and Central Blvd. via Seabrook Road and Center Street
  • Magenta LINK that operates on Thursdays and runs along Yamato Road to the Boca Raton Tri-Rail station

The LINK will deviate to shopping locations, medical centers and Tri-Rail stations, and connects to existing Palm Tran routes, thereby serving areas where fixed-routes are currently unavailable.  The routes will run Monday through Thursday with one to two routes in operation each day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is 50 cents each way. All vehicles are ADA accessible.

The LINK will deviate up to three-quarters of a mile from its planned routes for scheduled pick-ups and drop-offs and will have scheduled stops in addition to “flag down” locations along the route. Trips can be scheduled 72 hours in advance. The new service is fully funded by a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.

“We are excited about the accessibility that The LINK will give residents,” said Lili Agee, Marketing Manager for Palm Tran. “The LINK is going to make people’s lives a lot easier.”

Palm Tran's mission, since its inception in 1973, is to provide efficient, safe and inexpensive public transportation for the people of Palm Beach County. For route maps, additional information or to schedule a pick-up, visit www.palmtran.org or call 561-649-9838.

Get a Jump Start on Your Taxes

It’s tax season again! When it comes to working on your taxes, earlier is better. Early filers avoid the last-minute rush, lessen the possibility of mistakes, and get their refund earlier.

Here are seven ways to get a good jump on your tax preparation long before the April 15 deadline. For more tips, visit the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service’s Family and Consumer Division Web site here: http://www.pbcgov.com/coopext/FACS/

  • Gather all your records in advance. Make sure you have all you need including current W-2s and 1099s. Don’t forget to keep a copy for your files.
  • Get the right forms. All the forms are available on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov as well as at your local library.
  • Take your time. Don’t forget to take a needed break when filling out your taxes as rushing can mean making a mistake.
  • Double-check your math and verify all Social Security numbers. These make up the most common errors found on tax returns. Taking the time to check carefully will speed up your refund and reduce your chance of hearing from the IRS.
  • Get the fastest refund. When you file early, you receive your refund faster. If you choose direct deposit, you also receive your refund sooner than waiting for a check.
  • E-filing is easy. E-filing catches math errors, confirms receipt of your return, and gives you a faster refund.
  • Don’t panic. If you have a problem or a question, try the IRS Web site at IRS.gov or call customer service at 1-800-829-1040.
