Station 45: The 'Twilight Zone'
Station 45 was put into service in August of 1992 due to the increasing number of responses
into the Kings Point/Villages of Oriole area of Delray Beach. This area was originally serviced
by Station 42 on Hagen Ranch Road, but with the increasing amount of calls it was evident that
the single Paramedic Rescue unit from 42 (R42) could not handle the additional workload. The
original station was run out of a single-wide trailer located at 15127-A Jog Road, behind the
Kings Point Shopping Center. Initially, one Paramedic Rescue unit (R45) was staffed with 2
personnel. Eventually, a second Rescue was added to the station (R45B). In 1999, a permanent station
was built at 15450 Jog Road, between the entrance to the Floral Lakes development and the
Normandy entrance to Kings Point which is about a mile south of the old station. In mid 2004,
a Paramedic Rescue-Engine was added (RE45), increasing the minimum daily staffing to 8.
Today, the units from Station 45 respond to approximately 6600 calls yearly (combined between
all 3 units), making it the busiest firehouse in the County. We cover approximately 30,000
residents in about 4 square miles. About 2/3 of the residents are seasonal, so we are much
busier in the "season" (November-April) than in the rest of the year.
